The Office of State Representative Lauren Ashley Simmons is seeking unpaid Capitol and District Interns to support the work of House District 146, which includes both our Houston (District Office) and Austin (Capitol Office) operations. Interns will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced legislative office while learning about the policymaking process and the importance of community engagement.


Interns may apply to work in one or more focus areas:

  • Constituent Services – assisting constituents with casework, navigating state agencies, and connecting residents with resources.
  • Communications – supporting newsletters, social media, press releases, and district outreach events.
  • Legislative Policy – tracking legislation, conducting policy research, attending hearings/briefings, and drafting memos.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Depending on placement, interns may:

  • Assist in planning and staffing events such as Town Halls, Community Roundtables, and press conferences.
  • Respond to constituent inquiries and document casework in the Constituent Management System (CMS). Draft and edit communications, including newsletters, graphics, and social media content.
  • Conduct policy research and prepare written reports or memos for staff and the Representative.
  • Attend and report on legislative hearings, local government meetings, and community events.
  • Maintain updated contact lists of elected officials, community leaders, and constituent groups.
  • Provide day-to-day administrative and office support.

Qualifications

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with constituents, community leaders, and public officials.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, think critically, and problem-solve.
  • Interest in public policy, community engagement, and/or communications.
  • Reliable transportation for District Interns; Capitol Interns must reside in or near Austin during session.
