Lancaster, Texas – State Representative Carl Sherman (District 109) is hosting a District 109 Labor Force Texas Workforce Commission virtual Town Hall meeting Wednesday, April 22 at 1 p.m. for workers who have become unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This meeting will address issues that are important for the future.

Mr. Julian Alvarez III, the Commissioner representing Labor of the Texas Workforce Commission will be the guest speaker alongside Rep. Sherman at the virtual town hall meeting.

“Who else to speak on such an important topic during this critical time in our nation’s economy,” Rep. Sherman said in regard to Alvarez guesting this important town hall meeting. "According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics we were already at 7.1 million unemployed Americans, but now within a four-week stretch 22 million more Americans have filed for unemployment benefits. When the numbers are combined that equals more than 29 million unemployed. If you add the real numbers that's a national unemployment rate of 17.9%. For perspective: America has not experienced unemployment like this since 1938. As many of my constituents know and feel when America catches a cold many in my community catch the flu. Therefore', I felt it extremely important to have the State of Texas' Labor Commissioner come and speak directly to our community about resources available and how to navigate these very uncertain times since COVID-19," stated Representative Sherman.

Commissioner Alvarez represents the interests of more than 14 million Texas workers and makes sure these worker’s voices are heard in all the actions he takes on the Texas Workforce Commission. It is very important that the constituents in District 109 have their voices heard and represented by Mr. Alvarez.
