Legislation expands access to healthcare by creating incentives for volunteer physicians, Allows physicians to dispense medications and allows generic drugs to be prescribed with Medicaid

AUSTIN— Plano Representative Matt Shaheen announced today that he has filed three House Bills that will expand access to healthcare and reduce escalating healthcare costs for Texas families. Shaheen filed Bill 453 that creates tax incentives for physicians who agree to provide healthcare to the needy on a volunteer basis. A pilot program based on this concept was launched in Shaheen’s home county of Collin County, and it has been tremendously successful, increasing quality healthcare for the uninsured and reducing costs dramatically. Bill 460 will allow physicians to dispense certain medications themselves, and Bill 437 will allow physicians offering Medicaid services to prescribe generic drugs. Both of these bills will lower healthcare costs significantly. “I have spent substantial time talking with physicians, hospital executives and other healthcare experts about the obstacles that prevent them from giving the best possible care to their patients,” Shaheen said. “These common sense solutions came directly from them and their daily experiences in the trenches.”

Government healthcare results in harming millions of Americans by making healthcare unaffordable, causing many to lose access. Representative Shaheen’s legislation that leverages the free market and reduces regulatory burdens will both expand access to healthcare and reduce costs.
