State Representative Four Price has scheduled three committee hearings for next week at the Texas Capitol in Austin. On August 7th and 8th the House Select Committee on Opioids and Substance Abuse will hold the final two hearings on its extensive investigation into this important health issue that is adversely impacting nearly every community across our nation.

Specifically, on Tuesday, August 7th, the Select Committee chaired by Price will hear invited expert testimony on two specific topics: (1) examining the impact of substance abuse on those who are involved in the adult or juvenile criminal justice system and/or the Child Protective Services (CPS) system; and identifying the barriers to treatment and the availability of treatment services in various areas of our state; (2) identifying and determining the effectiveness of Texas specialty courts concentrating exclusively on substance use disorders. The following day, August 8th, the Select Committee invites the public to testify on any item pertaining to the committee's work during 2018, including any matter discussed in the previous four committee hearings.

The report of the findings and recommendations of the House Select Committee on Opioids and Substance Abuse is due on November 1st of this year.

"The House Select Committee on Opioids and Substance Abuse has heard excellent testimonies and I expect the next two hearings to prove equally valuable to our work. These final hearings will wrap up the comprehensive set of charges assigned to the committee by Speaker Straus. I am certain that our work will contribute valuable information to the Opioids and Substance Abuse report," stated Chairman Four Price.

Additionally, the House Committee on Public Health chaired by Price will hold a joint hearing on Thursday, August 9th with the House Committee on Human Services chaired by Representative Richard Raymond. "I am optimistic that the testimony to be heard will provide sound data so that we, as lawmakers, can ascertain and analyze accurately the prevalence of children, in the CPS system, who have a mental illness, a substance use disorder, or both," stated Chairman Price. "Helping children has consistently been a priority of mine in the legislature and throughout my adult life," further commented Price.
