Reading is D.E.A.R. to State Representative John Wray; encourages community participation on February 3rd  print page

by: Rep. Wray, John

WAXAHACHIE - State Representative John Wray took a moment away from the 85th legislative session to Drop Everything And Read a Texas themed book to local Waxahachie kindergarten students at Wedgeworth Elementary. He hopes to emphasize the importance of reading and to promote the upcoming 20th annual WISD D.E.A.R. Day on Friday, February 3rd, 2017.

Representative Wray shared, "I'm fortunate to be a part of WISD's D.E.A.R. Day again this year. We hope that everyone in the community will find out what they can do to help on February 3rd. It's also a great time to read a book at home or share a book with a neighbor. Whatever we can do to promote the importance of reading is so essential to a child's success in school."

D.E.A.R. stands for "Drop Everything and Read," a national celebration of reading designed to remind families to make reading a priority in their lives. One of the goals of the program is to equip every elementary school classroom in the district with at least one new book on the designated D.E.A.R. Day. Since the program began 20 years ago at WISD, over 4,450 books have been donated and 9,500 hours of reading are volunteered for this annual event by businesses, organizations, parents, grandparents, and other friends in education.

Wray went on to say, "If you have a favorite childhood book find out how you can donate it. Michele and I enjoyed reflecting back on book titles we enjoyed as kids, and the books our children have enjoyed, when deciding which to share. There are countless ways to make a difference on D.E.A.R. Day and throughout the year. I encourage everyone to get involved."
