KERRVILLE, TEXAS – Today, State Representative Andrew Murr hosted a meeting with groundwater conservation district managers and water experts to discuss the status of current groundwater management in the state and the future of water policy in Texas.

“I believe that it is important to stay in tune with those people who are our boots on the ground when it comes to groundwater management and conservation,” said Murr. “Hearing from district managers about their successes and failures, their concerns and the concerns of their elected board members is necessary if we are to make the best policy choices for our communities in the Hill Country, South Texas and West Texas. Unlike some parts of the state, water is not easily found everywhere here where we call home, and we must not take it for granted that water will always be a readily available resource.”

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss and exchange policy ideas, to share concerns about urban and suburban water needs and demands, and to prepare for the upcoming legislative session in Austin, which begins in January 2017. “With the risk of the next drought always lurking around the corner, wise management and forward-looking goals must remain a priority, even in times of plentiful rainfall,” Murr added.

The informal exchange of ideas included attendees representing many of the 10 groundwater conservation districts (GCDs) and two river authorities in House District 53, including: Headwaters GCD, Upper Guadalupe River Authority, Bandera County River Authority and Ground Water District, Real-Edwards Conservation and Reclamation District, Kimble County GCD, Menard County UWD, Sutton County UWCD, Hickory UWCD No. 1, among others. House District 53 is composed of Bandera, Crockett, Edwards, Kimble, Kerr, Llano, Mason, Medina, Menard, Real, Schleicher and Sutton Counties.
