Burns Reaffirms Commitment to Higher Education with New Legislation  print page

by: Rep. Burns, DeWayne

AUSTIN – In one of his first actions as a State Representative, DeWayne Burns (Cleburne) reaffirmed his commitment to higher education in the region by introducing a bill to provide capital for Tarleton State University expansion in Stephenville and at its proposed new Fort Worth campus. Burns, a graduate of Tarleton State in 1994, said the additional funding would directly benefit students from Bosque, Johnson and surrounding counties.

"Tarleton State is a great resource for our community," Burns said. "The $75 million Applied Sciences Building in Stephenville would offer state-of-the-art laboratories for engineering and agricultural programs, and the $55 million for Fort Worth would facilitate construction of the first building of a new campus."

Tarleton State is one of the fastest growing universities in Texas. The proposed Fort Worth campus would be built on 80 acres of land along the Chisholm Trail Parkway in Fort Worth, recently donated to Tarleton State by the Walton Group of Companies.

A member of The Texas A&M University System, Tarleton State has campuses in Stephenville, Fort Worth, Waco, Midlothian and online. It engages with its communities to provide real-world learning experiences and to engage societal needs while maintaining its core values of integrity, leadership, tradition, civility, excellence and service.

Burns concluded, "Before I was elected state representative, I was a member of the Cleburne ISD Board of Trustees. Doing right by our kids and giving them every opportunity to succeed in life is what got me into politics in the first place, so it's fitting that this is the first piece of legislation I've decided to author in the Texas House. Tarleton State helped give me the tools I needed to succeed in life, and I want to make sure they continue to do the same for my children and for all of the children of our district."
