Representative Klick looks to stop secret do-not-resuscitate orders  print page

by: Rep. Klick, Stephanie

Austin, TX - Today, State Representative Stephanie Klick (Fort Worth) filed House Bill 1455, her first piece of legislation. This bill looks to stop the practice of doctors placing do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders on a patient’s chart without first getting approval from the patient or the family.

“I've been involved in end of life cases in which doctors placed secret do-not-resuscitate order on a patients chart. It is unacceptable that doctors can make unilateral life and death decisions for patients without consulting them or their loved ones ahead of time,” said Klick.

Current law allows a doctor to place a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order on a patients chart without first getting approval from the patient or legal guardian. Many people are unaware of this fact and have been shocked that these life and death decisions are being made without their knowledge. House Bill 1455 looks to make this process more transparent and put safe guards in place to ensure that DNR orders are only being used for those who wish to have one in their chart.

Klick went on to say, "It is also important that patients and families are making their health care decisions and we need to make sure that these patient's rights aren't being placed in someone else's hands. House Bill 1455 will fix this problem and I look forward to it being passed."

State Representative Stephanie Klick was elected to the Texas House in November of 2012 and represents North Richland Hills, Richland Hills, Watauga, Haltom City, and parts of Fort Worth. Klick is a graduate of Texas Christian University and currently works as a nursing consultant.
