Local Artist Creates District 127 Ornament for Lone Star Celebration Tree  print page

by: Rep. Huberty, Dan

Austin, TX - The Isbell Family, residents of District 127, joined Representative Huberty's family at the Texas Capitol on Friday, November 30th, to help trim the Lone Star Celebration Christmas Tree. The tree is set-up every November in the House Chamber and remains there through the holiday season for visitors to enjoy.

The 2012 artist, Sophie Isbell, crafted a wonderful ornament to represent House District 127. Painted solid black then emblazoned with two different oil derricks, one red and one blue, it reflects the district's largest city, Humble, and its originating company, Humble Oil. Sophie had the opportunity to place the ornament on the tree. Sophie's parents, Keith and Annette; brother, Zack; grandfather, Larry Thomas; aunt, Leslie Alger and cousin, Meagin Isbell, were also on-hand for the tree-trimming celebration.

When asked about decorating the ornament and the tree-trimming, Sophie said, "It was a really cool experience to make the ornament and come to Austin to hang it on the tree at the Capitol. I didn't know that huge tree was real until I felt it! I had a really good time making that ornament for the tree. I tried to make it something that represented Humble. On the background of the ornament, I put some black glitter because I thought that would look like oil. Then I painted two oil derricks on it and used the colors of the Houston Oilers football team. I loved being a part of Christmas at the Capitol."

"Sophie created a really great ornament to represent our community. She was able to bring the history of our area to the Lone Star Tree allowing visitors to the House Chamber to learn more about District 127. I knew she would do a great job representing our community and I thank Sophie and her family for joining us in Austin for this fun event," Representative Huberty said.

The District 127 ornament, along with the other district ornaments, can be viewed on the House of Representatives website at

Speaker Straus and his wife, Julie, invite each House member to provide a decorated ornament for the Lone Star Celebration Christmas Tree in the Chamber of the Texas House of Representatives. The ornaments will hang proudly on a Texas-sized tree from November 30, 2012, through January 2, 2013. You can learn more about each District Ornament and the Lone Star Celebration Tree at
