~ Bill calls for a homestead exemption for disabled veterans ~

AUSTIN--Rep. Joe Moody filed his first bill in the Texas House of Representatives Tuesday.

"I wanted my first bill to be something that I believed strongly in and that will benefit an important group of Texas heroes," Rep. Moody said. "This bill helps the men and women that have served our country and defended our freedom."

House Bill 1008 would exempt veterans that are classified as 100% disabled by the federal government from taxation of the total appraised value on their residential homestead.

Proposition 9, which allowed for this exemption was overwhelmingly passed by the voters in 2007 with 91% approval.

"The people have spoken," said Moody. "I am eager to address the issues affecting veterans in my district and across the state."

Rep. Moody has made veteran and military issues one of the cornerstones of his legislative agenda for the 81st legislative session.

The Texas Legislature will stay in session for 140 days between January and May. This is the 81st session since Texas entered the Union in 1845.

District 78 residents are encouraged to contact Rep. Moody and his staff in his capitol office during session at 512-463-0728 or 915-532-1391.
