Speaker Announces General Counsel's Departure  print page

Austin) - Speaker Tom Craddick (Midland) today announced that his longtime general counsel and policy advisor, Royce Poinsett, is departing to continue his legal and public policy career in the private sector. Poinsett will join the legislative and governmental relations practice group at the Austin office of McGinnis Lochridge & Kilgore, LLP.

"Royce has served the Texas Legislature with true distinction for the past four years, providing wise counsel to both me and the entire House of Representatives," Speaker Craddick said. "On behalf of Nadine and all the members of the Texas House, I thank Royce for his longtime service to the State of Texas, and I wish him well as he continues his successful career in law and public policy.”

Poinsett has advised the speaker and House members on legal and policy issues for the past two regular sessions and three special sessions of the Legislature. He also served as the House Ethics Advisor and as the Speaker's Designee on the Texas Enterprise Fund Board.

Before joining the Speaker's Office, Poinsett advised Governor Rick Perry as his counsel for budget, planning and policy. He also served Governor George W. Bush, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson. In Baltimore, Poinsett served as the political aide for then City Councilman Martin O’Malley, who is now the governor of Maryland.

Prior to entering public service, Poinsett practiced corporate law with the nationally respected law firms of Baker Botts L.L.P., and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati L.L.P. He attended the Johns Hopkins University, the London School of Economics, and the University of Texas School of Law, where he was a member of the Texas Law Review.
