Biography

Dr. Greg Bonnen, R-District 24, is a practicing neurosurgeon currently serving his fourth term in the Texas Legislature. District 24 is in Galveston County and includes League City, Friendswood, Clear Lake Shores, Kemah, Dickinson, Santa Fe, Hitchcock, Bayou Vista, Jamaica Beach, and Tiki Island.



For the 86th Legislative Session, Representative Bonnen serves on the Appropriations Committee and serves as chair of the Appropriations subcommittee on higher and public education. Additionally, he serves as a member of the House Insurance Committee. Following the 86th Legislative Session, Rep. Bonnen was appointed to chair the Select Committee on Statewide Health Care Costs, and was appointed to Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) funding structure oversight board. For the 85th Legislative Session, Representative Bonnen served on the Appropriations Committee, appropriations subcommittee on health and human services, and the Energy Resources Committee. During the 84th Legislative Session, Representative Bonnen served on the Appropriations Committee, appropriations subcommittee for general government, criminal justice, and the judiciary, House Committee on Insurance, and the Select Committee on Mental Health. During the 83rd Legislative Session Representative Bonnen served on the Appropriations Committee, Appropriations subcommittee on higher and public education, the Insurance Committee, and the joint interim committee on coastal barrier systems.



Representative Bonnen was born and raised on the Gulf Coast. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Biochemistry. After graduating from medical school at UTMB with high honors in 1992, Representative Bonnen remained at UTMB for six years of residency training in neurosurgery. After completing neurosurgical training in 1998, he joined the UTMB faculty as a fulltime assistant professor until leaving in 2000 to found Texas Brain and Spine Center.

In 2003, Representative Bonnen and his partners founded Houston Physician's Hospital. He has served as chairman of the board since 2006. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Third Coast Bank, and is the chairman of the board of the Medical Strategic Network.

Dr. Bonnen has been blessed to participate in numerous mission trips to Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, Panama, and the Philippines. Representative Bonnen and his wife Kim live in Friendswood and have two daughters.

El Representante Bonnen reside en el Condado de Galveston desde hace más de veinte años, desde que empezó a asistir a la UTMB en 1988. También trabaja en la junta directiva del Heritage Bank.

Se graduó con distinciones en la Universidad de Texas AyM con una licenciatura científica en Bioquímica. Mientras estaba en la universidad, el Representante Bonnen pasó dos veranos trabajando como consejero en el Texas Lion's Camp para niños con discapacidad, que, según él acredita, le permitió conocer tanto su profesión como médico como a quien sería su esposa, Kim. Continuó dedicando tiempo a su iglesia y a diferentes organizaciones caritativas, incluidas 13 misiones con Constructores sin Fronteras de Texas y la Red Médica Estratégica, una organización basada en la fe. El Representante Bonnen y su familia proveyeron atención médica y ayudaron a construir escuelas y hogares en México y Panamá. El Representante Bonnen también donó tiempo, servicio y talento a misiones en Haití, Cuba y Filipinas. Trabaja en la junta y es el presidente de la Red Estratégica Médica.

El Representante Bonnen y su esposa, Kim, viven en Friendswood y tienen dos hijas: Lindsay y Janae.
