Austin, TX: The first hearing of the Sunset Committee met Thursday morning at the State Capitol. The state agencies up for public hearing were the following: Sulphur River Basin Authority, Upper Colorado River Authority, Central Colorado River Authority, Palo Duro River Authority of Texas, Texas State Board of Pharmacy, Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners, Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners, and Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, State Board of Dental Examiners and State Bar of Texas and Board of Law Examiners

The 12-member Sunset Commission has five members of the Senate and one public member appointed by the Lieutenant Governor, and five members of the House and one public member appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Approximately 20-30 state agencies go through the sunset process each legislative session. The sunset process allows the legislature to look at each agency and make improvements that can significantly affect how state government works.

"I think this is the time and opportunity to make a real difference in Texas by ensuring that all state agencies are held accountable and that they are spending hard working tax payer dollars efficiently. It is not about just closing agencies-it is about clearly restoring the proper role of government in every agency we review," Said Flynn.

Representative Flynn also said, "My initial review of the agency sunset reports suggest that that they are performing the mission that they were created to do, but we want to be sure they are concentrating on transparency, access and improvements for the taxpayers, not on inter agency improvements. Our recommendations need to start with ‘Texans need better…..’ I believe this session will be one of the most effective for the Sunset Commission because there is a real desire to make some significant changes that help the agencies and Texas as a whole."
