Biography

Representative Donna Howard has served in the Texas House of Representatives since 2006. She
currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Select Committee on Health Care Reform, is a member
of the House Appropriations Committee and the Higher Education Committee. Rep. Howard
also serves as the Chairwoman of the Texas Women’s Health Caucus which is the largest caucus
in the country solely focused on advancing women’s health policy. During her time in the
Legislature, Chair Howard has advocated to increase funding and access to women’s health
services and has fought against anti-abortion misinformation. Over the last year, she has worked
to increase national awareness of the current state of women’s health policy in Texas and the
effect anti-abortion legislation has had in our communities.

A native of Austin, Donna earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing and a Master’s degree in health
education from the University of Texas. She worked as a critical care nurse at Brackenridge and
Seton hospitals and served as Austin’s first hospital-based Patient Education Coordinator. Donna
is a past president of the Texas Nurses Association (District 5) and was a health education
instructor at UT.

Donna was elected to the Eanes ISD board in West Austin for the 1996-1999 term. She has
served on the boards of Austin Area Interreligious Ministries, Common Cause Texas, Texas
Freedom Network, and the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. She now serves as a
board member of the Expanding Horizons Foundation, supporting low-income housing and
education.

Representative Howard was married to attorney Derek Howard for 40 wonderful years and they
proudly raised three children together. Rep. Howard is also a grandmother to seven perfect
grandchildren.

La representante Donna Howard se desempeña en la Cámara de Representantes de Texas desde el 2006. Es miembro del Comité de Apropiaciones y de Asuntos Estatales de la Cámara.

Donna, nativa de Austin, tiene un título en Enfermería y una maestría en Educación Sanitaria de la Universidad de Texas. Trabajó como enfermera de cuidados críticos en los hospitales de Brackenridge y Seton, y se desempeñó como la primera coordinadora de educación de pacientes en hospitales de Austin. Donna fue presidenta de la Asociación de Enfermeros de Texas (distrito 5) e instructora de educación sanitaria en la Universidad de Texas.

Donna fue elegida para la Junta Directiva del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Eanes, en el oeste de Austin, para el período 1996-1999. Se desempeñó en juntas directivas de organización como Ministerios Interreligiosos del Área de Austin; Causa Común de Texas); Red de Texas para la Libertad y la Campaña de Texas para Prevenir el Embarazo Adolescente. Ahora se desempeña como miembro de una Junta Directiva de la Fundación Expanding Horizons, la cual brinda apoyo para viviendas y educación de personas con bajos ingresos.

También ha sido miembro de los siguientes comités y grupos de trabajo, entre otros: Comité de Calendarios de la Cámara; Comité de Cultura, Recreación y Turismo; Comité Selecto de Portavoces sobre Impactos Fiscales de la Seguridad Fronteriza; Grupo de Trabajo de la Cuenca Alta de LCRA; Comité Selecto para Establecer un Equilibrio Suficiente del Fondo de Estabilización Económica; Comité Provisional Conjunto sobre la Receta y el Surtido de Sustancias Controladas; Comité Provisional Conjunto sobre la Fórmula del Financiamiento de la Educación Superior y el Comité de Supervisión Conjunta de las Instalaciones Gubernamentales.

La representante Howard estuvo casada con Derek Howard, abogado, durante 40 maravillosos años y juntos tuvieron el orgullo de criar a tres hijos, que ahora le han dado siete nietos perfectos.
